DIVERSITY AND THE LASH INDUSTRY

There is a 𝙢𝙖𝙟𝙤𝙧 𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙤𝙛 𝙙𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 within 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆. I’ve always been hyper-aware of this fact, since the day I began my journey back in 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟲. And although the industry has since grown, the opportunities for 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 remain the same. ⠀
⠀
These truths are 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 at 𝙢𝙖𝙟𝙤𝙧 𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙝 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨/𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨. It’s apparent in the 𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜/𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙨 developed by “𝙗𝙞𝙜 𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨.” It’s also clear based on the artists that are consistently selected to speak on 𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙚𝙡𝙨/𝙥𝙤𝙙𝙘𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙨. It’s just taken a 𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 for people to actually notice! ⠀
⠀
As a 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻 and lash artist, I know how important it is to feel represented in beauty. More often than less, 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. However black identity is often glorified and praised, in spaces where black women are not celebrated. 𝘕𝘦𝘨𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘣𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘸𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵, only further perpetuates 𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗼𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀. ⠀
⠀
It’s time for the 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 to start celebrating 𝙗𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙨/𝙘𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 [𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺], in the same way the industry celebrates black culture and identity. ⠀
⠀
What are some ways 𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙝 𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨 can improve and become more 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙫𝙚? How can lash artists 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 within their own businesses?
